Processing valid survey data was one of the major challenges in this research project.
I sincerely wish to express my gratitude to both my Chinese and Dutch colleagues
and friends who helped me to issue and collect all the questionnaires. Among them
are the chairman of the Chinese Education Management Information Systems
Association China (EMISA), Prof. Huang Da wu, the secretary general of EMISA,
Prof. Wang Yi xin, and my friend Gao Ying at Xi’an Jiaotong University. I am very
grateful to all persons who filled in the questionnaires. Please understand that I am
not able to mention all names since the survey was conducted in a voluntary and
anonymous way. Your responses were invaluable for this research.
A special appreciation goes to Dr. A. Rutkowski. She generously gave of her time
when guiding me in the questionnaire design and also during the statistical analysis of

Many thanks to ir. H.M.W Verbeek and the members of the automation office of our
faculty. They helped me in dealing with computer problems, especially with the
implementation of the Chinese version of Office and other Chinese programs.
I am very grateful to Mrs. Withagen, my Chinese friends Mrs. Cai and Tong Yi qian,
as well as my Dutch neighbours, Mr. and Mrs. Spaan. I cannot adequately explain all
their helpful contributions, but I will always remember their support when I was
facing some very difficult moments.

Sincere appreciations go to my best Dutch friends Prof. Dr. van Lint and Mrs. van
Lint, the former Rector of the Eindhoven University of Technology, Prof. Heetman,
Prof. Stevens and Mrs. Stevens. We often visited each other and had many interesting
discussions and pleasant conversations. Being with them and their families was
always heart warming. Their hospitality, friendship, concern and encouragement
made me feel at home.
Last but not least, I deeply thank my beloved family, my husband and my son, for
their continued help. Since I started this research project, they have all been
supportive in more ways than I expected. Their lenience, understanding and support
gave me very special inspiration to do my work, which was the real driving force to
