Dana in Kindred has to carry out her duties in the slavery system of early 19th Century in order to protect her ancestors and thereby her current existence. To black women in the society of 19th century, they didn't have any choices of their own. What they are supposed to do is to provide service to their owners. This is even more unbearable to Dana, a modern woman who married a white man. The sharp comparison between the two roles of Dana made readers feel more sharply the evil of the slavery. Shori in Fledgling, though living in a much modern society and is not harmful to human being, suffered the hatred and killing of human being.

    When Bulter wrote Kindred, the Civil Rights Movement in American just finished. Black people in America got equal rights with white people according to the law, but in reality, the racism still exists and the trauma of black people from the past could not be healed soon. Therefore, Kindred is like a nightmare of a modern black woman has with the old memories of her people.

    Fledgling was written in the 21st century, 140 years after the Emancipation and 40 years after the civil rights movement. However, the trauma in the book still
