The study ofempathy in Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties has been up to the height of systematic theory.Since modern periods, especially 20thcentury, many scholars and researchers, likewise,devoted their own efforts to the study of empathy theory. The theory of “empathy”, which wasdefined by Lipps, was firstly introduced into Chinese aesthetics by Zhu Guangqian in the 1930’s.And then Zhu developed it and formed his own view about empathy by combining it with theChinese traditional philosophy—the unity of heaven and humanity.He Ziran (1991) published an article“言语交际中的语用移情”(Pragmatic empathy in dailyverbal communication) on the journal Foreign language teaching and Research, in which he firstbrought the concept of empathy into the pragmatics, and he further subdivided empathy intopragmalinguistic empathy and sociopragmatic empathy in intercultural communication.He expounded that the main point of pragmalinguistic empathy is that both the speaker andpoints out that the first layer meaning of empathy as communication skill is to give appropriatefeedback or reaction, ie, to produce emotional resonance. And people who apply empathy neatlywould avoid the wrong doings such as evaluating, judging and criticizing other people or foreignculture.
