3.每篇文章中分别由2、3、4个和4个以上平行项构成的平行结构的数量。此项统计旨在了解母语作者在使用平行结构时在项数上的选择。以上例1、例2中已出现2项平行和3项平行。请看下面4项和4项以上平行结构举例:例3:由4个独立句构成的平行结构:These are the boys of Point du Hoc. There are the menwho took the cliffs. 4.每篇文章中分别由单词、词组/短语、分句/从句、独立句、段落构成的平行结构的数量。这项统计也是为了弄清母语使用者在运用平行结构时,比较倾向于使用何种语法构造。以上例1至例5中已分别出现了由单词(名词、形容词)、词组/短语(介词短语、形容词词组)、独立句、段落构成的平行结构。请再看下面由从句和分句构成的平行结构:

例6:条件、地点状语从句:If you are purposeful, if you are mindful, if you showyourselves to be critical, thoughtful, interested students, youwill give the university the good name of a place where impor-tantthings take place, where the life of the mind is fully andrichly lived. 说明:本例中有2个平行结构:1)building, library, faculty, community构成的平行结构;2)4个名词后跟随的4个定语从句构成的平行结构。例8:宾语从句:Their exampleremindsusthatgeniusdoesnothave aped-igree, thatyou donotdiscovernewworlds byplyingsafe, con-ventional waters.
