摘要：With the development of globalization, code mixing between Chinese and English comes into existence as a special linguistic phenomenon in China and has received lots of linguists’ interest. This paper first introduces some linguists’ theories, research achievement and several concepts of the relevant terms, and then it gives the definition of the term code mixing as well as the distinction between code mixing and another similar term-code switching. Through some examples written and oral, the author summarizes two main modes of code mixing between Chinese and English-code mixing within sentences and code mixing between sentences, and analyzes the characteristics of those two modes in grammatical perspective, and at last provides a summation of the five functions of code mixing between Chinese and English.

Mayers-Scotton, one of the most influential scholars in syntactic field of code mixing, submitted matrix language frame model (MLF model) (1993, 1995, 1997) which includes three
hypotheses: the Matrix Language hypothesis, the Matrix Language blocking hypothesis and the Embedded Language island trigger hypothesis. Studies on syntax are based on grammatical theory, so with the birth of optimality theory in phonology, Bhatt (1997, 2001) initially suggested elucidating code mixing from this point of view and his model has some advantages over others. In psycholinguistic field, Giles & Coupland (1991) and Giles & Powesland (1997) advanced speech accommodation theory which has two central concepts: convergence, referring to the situation when the speaker adapts his/her language style to the interlocutors in order to indicate solidarity; and divergence, the situation when the speaker intentionally adapts his/her language or language style to enlarge the social distance with the interlocutors.
