1.1 The importance of studying English middle construction
Since middle construction has been one of the hottest topics in linguistics recentyears, many scholars devoted into the study from different perspectives. Although muchhas been made in the study of English middle construction (hereafter, EMC), there arestill some issues left to be solved from a bird's eye-view of the construction in proper.Such as the mechanism of EMC under the cognitive linguistics frame and the eventimplied in the EMC sentences. The aim of this thesis is to explore what motivates the useof EMC, and to add something new to the EMC's previous studies. 1.2 Purpose of the study
The research intends to analyze the English middle construction from a cognitiveperspective. Despite some similarities between English middle construction (EMC) andEnglish passive/active construction (EPC/EAC), EMC shows its uniqueness in manyaspects compared to the other two constructions in English. On this account, the thesisbegins with the construction-grammar-based analysis of EMC, with the focus on theconstruction's syntactic features and its generative mechanism . As EMC, like otherconstruction, represents a mapping of human recognition to the reality (roughly assumedto be a sum of various events), we aim to demonstrate that EMC finds its uniqueness inspecial eventuality as illustrated by the event features. In this way, the present paper ishoped to provide a new look at the middle construction in English.

1.3 Thesis organization
The thesis consists of five parts.The first part states the importance and purpose of study, telling organization of thethesis.The second part is on the literature view, introducing the definition and theclassification of English middle construction, providing the theoretical framework.Relating to the English middle construction (the construction grammar and the Eventsyntax) and briefing the previous researches abroad and at home.The third part as one of the body part gives a construction analysis of Englishmiddle construction, to prove that EMC is a unique construction in English. Many detailsare discussed relating to EMC here, like EMC's construction specialty, its figure-groundcomposition and its typical form and non-typical form.The fourth provides an event-based analysis on English middle construction,including the roles the components play in the construction, the event features all EMCsshare and EMC's event relevancy and its cognitive mechanisms.The fifth part is the conclusion, making a summary of the whole and clarifying theimplications and limitations of the present paper.
