f born, Internet engulfs the world at lighting speed. There are 187 countries and areasare covered by Internet, the number of Internet users are over 100 million. BecauseInternet can carry different transmission modes at one time, for example, the writteninformation, sound, images or digital flow, so Internet has the advantage over traditionalmass media in efficiency and benefit. Internet has turned into the fourth media after radio, newspaper and TV. Because
computer science is monopolized by the English-speakingcountries, nowadays, 85% of the web pages are designed in English, 100% of the sourcecodes are English. Internet is the English networks in a way. So English, especiallyAmerican English becomes more popular. American cultural influence spread as theapplication of Internet. Although governments of non-countries accelerate infrastructureconstruction of space information to fight for discourse power, the incomparableadvantages of English in network service still further speed English globalization, promoting English linguistic dominance to climb up a peak.British linguist Phillipson used the term English linguistic imperialism to describe thephenomenon of English popularity. He analyzes the reasons responsible for the success ofEnglish in the global language market. He proposes a more thorough understanding ofEnglish linguistic imperialism, in his opinion:English popularity has political and economic aims. English education hinders themother-tongue learning and threatens the existence of the national language.English globalization marginalizes other languages gradually. The colonial rule ofEnglish linguistic imperialism means more than occupied territories and economicplunder, it also means conquer mind. Now, English is threatening native languageand culture. If people from non-Englishcountries do not aware of the urgency of protecting and maintaining linguistic humanrights, lingual and cultural diversity will be broken and disastrous consequences willhappen. The most marked example is the distinction of Indian languages. There were 2200kinds of Indian languages, but only 155 of them left. Most of these 155 kinds will bedistinct at 2030. It is the outcome of the policy of language assimilation. Language is thecarrier of culture and civilization. English popularity brings the cultural infiltration.America takes advantage of the powerful media and military strength, conveys theAmerican culture and value over the ocean. The cultural codes loaded by English areexerting gradual and imperceptible influence on ideas and cultural orientation of thenumerous English learners. English is a tool of creating colonial awareness for the westerninvaders. So, English learners can not take language as a simple communicationalinstrument. Language is a strong tool of involving the competition of reallocation of theglobal resources; it is an important way of getting economical and political benefits.Facing the fiercely cultural attack, a war to defend national language and culture isinevitable.
