eding research.Within the framework of conceptual metaphor proposed by Lakoff and Johnson anddescriptive translation studies, the thesis intends to summarize the translation approachesof body organ metaphors on the basis of statistical analysis. Generally speaking,translation strategies can be discussed from the two aspects: foreignization anddomestication (in many scholars’ view, omission can also be adopted as an efficient wayof translation and thus often recognized as a third strategy, but in this thesis it belongs tothe strategy of domestication). However, when it comes to the translation methods ofconceptual metaphors, especially those body organ metaphors from a certain text and itscorresponding translation version, are there any specific translation methods or laws oftranslating? The thesis attempts to find out the methods via a statistical analysis of aChinese text and its English version. After observing the metaphorical examples bycomparison of the source and target texts, it tries to give explanations on the laws of bodyorgan metaphor translation.
1.3 Organization of the thesis论文结构
The thesis is composed of six parts and each part will be introduced in the followingpassages.The first part is the introduction which explains the background, significance andpurpose of the thesis as well as the structure. Then the second part is devoted to theliterature review of what the related study has achieved at home and abroad, includingthe overview of metaphor, metaphor translation studies and the current study of Lu Xun’sworks. And the metaphor for this research is mainly the conceptual metaphor proposedby Lakoff and Johnson.Part three gives a systematic introduction to descriptive translation studies, thedefinition and characteristics of body organ metaphors, and descriptive studies of thetranslation of body organ metaphors. In this part, it offers a comparatively comprehensiveknowledge of conceptual metaphor from the viewpoint of Lakoff and Johnson and givesa concrete introduction to three categories of conceptual metaphor. As this part can beviewed as the theoretical basis for the proceeding parts, part four presents the researchmethod covering research hypothesis, questions, research tools, research feasibility anddata collection.Then there comes the central part of this thesis, part five, which provides anempirical statistical analysis of the translation of body organ metaphors. This part is acase study, and Lu Xun’s collected stories of Nahan and its English version Call to Armstranslated by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang are under investigation in light of thetheories mentioned above. After statistical analysis of the two texts, it attempts to makeexplanations about laws of translating, mainly from the perspectives of language, culture,context and translator’s stance.The last part is a conclusion which gives an overview of the whole thesis,summarizing the major findings through the previous study and also pointing out thelimitations and suggestions for further study.
