In this study, we attempt to carry out research by analyzing metadiscourseresources in English RA abstracts within the framework of Hyland‘s (2005)interpersonal model of metadiscourse, as RA abstracts remains a field which has notreceived much attention among discourse analysts. Another motivation for the studyis that it may have pedagogical implications for our Chinese researchers consideringthe fact that any journals published in languages other than English also require thesubmission of an English version of the abstract (Lorés, 2004). One of the mainobjectives of this study is to investigate the frequency of occurrence of metadiscourseresources and find what subcategories metadiscourse RA abstract writers prefer toemploy in abstracts and how they are distributed according to linguistics pReferences.The possible explanations of linguistic preferences for metadiscourse resources arealso explored.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Introduction
This chapter focuses on a review of previous studies on RA abstracts. It firstdiscusses the importance of abstracts in academic discourse and singles out abstractsfor an in-depth analysis in section 2.2. Then, section 2.3 investigates previous Studiesof abstracts in research articles from the perspective of schematic structure, linguisticfeatures of abstracts and from a cross-cultural perspective. It argues that moreattention should be paid to the study of abstracts within the framework ofmetadiscourse. Next, in section 2.4, definitions of metadiscourse from different pointsof view are introduced for a complete understanding of metadiscourse. Finally, adetailed introduction of relevant classifications of metadiscourse resources is alsopresented to provide a solid theoretical foundation for the present study.

2.2 Significance of Abstract
In today‘s competitive academic world, there is increasing pressure for writers topublish their works and writers find it necessary to offer an abstract that presents theirfindings to the other members of the academic community.
