摘要:Considering the global demands for nurses’ English competence, the current teaching methods of NOE and the latest issues of teaching NOE, this thesis intends to testify the feasibility and effectiveness of applying medical dramas in NOE teaching. Applying medical dramas in teaching NOE needs to partially rely on the teaching facilities.
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the study
With the increasing development of the world’s globalization, the number of foreign-invested institutions, hospitals and wards is growing rapidly. Nurses with higher English level are in an urgent need. Meanwhile, with the growth of world’s aging population, more international nurses are needed by some developed countries. Thus more and more nursing students choose to study or work abroad after graduation in Australia and America. There is no doubt that the demands for their English level are gradually enhancing. Especially their Nursing English level has been one of the crucial qualifications that the hospitals require. In such cases, it is indispensable to set up Nursing English courses at the aim of cultivating advanced nursing professional talents. The aim of Nursing Oral English course requires students to communicate with their patients about diseases, health, hospital facilities and health care, etc. in English without any difficulty. Nursing Oral English focuses on developing students’ oral English competence in clinical environment. Nursing English as one kind of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is different from college English. According to Tom Hutchinson & Alan Waters (2002:19), ESP is an approach to language learning, which is based on learner need. For nursing students, some of them might work in foreign-funded hospitals, wards or even work abroad, so the course content needs to be chosen and designed based on the students’ needs.

1.2 Purposes of the study
Considering the global demands for nurses’ English competence, the current teaching methods of NOE and the latest issues of teaching NOE, this thesis intends to testify the feasibility and effectiveness of applying Medical dramas in NOE teaching. Applying medical dramas in teaching NOE needs to partially rely on the teaching facilities. Fortunately, with the development of the computer technologies, most colleges are well equipped with multi-media classrooms and language labs with Internet access. Applying medical videos and TV series into classroom teaching can lead students into an authentic language using environment which is more vivid, attractive and impressive. In our countries, it seems that textbook is the core of a course. Most teachers teach classes strictly according to textbooks which are less interesting and less attractive to students. Most listening materials of the textbooks are mechanically recorded and even out-of-date. On the contrary, the medical dramas can to some extent provide authentic and the latest materials for the classroom teaching. Besides, applying video clips in class can partially promote students’ motivation for study, as videos provide vivid pictures, from which students can guess the meaning of the scene they are watching even though they might be blocked by some of the tough medical terms.
