摘要:It is clear that vocabulary is extremely significant for language learning. A famousscholar named Nation (2001:2) mentioned in his book that either researchers or so manylearners consider vocabulary as the key factor for language and that without enough words,the process of learning English will surely be hindered.

1. Introduction


1.1 Background of the Study
It is known that vocabulary, which is the most significant part of the language system, isthe solid base for any language. Harmer (1990:158), who is a successful and distinguishedscholar, mentioned in his book, if the language structure is compared to all the hard partsforming human beings’ body, vocabulary provides the language with all vital organs, musclesand also blood, which are the necessities for mastering a language. The size of vocabulary isthe most important part of language communication and is considered a representation of alearner’s language value. Wallace (1982:9), another outstanding scholar, in his book TeachingVocabulary, stated that, to a certain extent, learning a foreign language is to acquire all thevocabulary of the target language.Nowadays, with the rapid development of science and technology, more and moreEnglish learners are springing up like mushrooms so that there are the most English learnersof the world in China. Moreover, it takes the Chinese people a lot of time, money and energyto learn and acquire the foreign languages. As for school students, they are required to studyhard to meet the minimum vocabulary amount set by the Syllabus. Certainly, at differentlearning stages, there are diverse requirements for the vocabulary size. After the reformationof New Curriculum Standards, senior high school students must make efforts to master about3500 words in order to pass the College Entrance Examination and to be enrolled by a collegeor university. Then, after students have stepped into college, not only English major learnersbut also non-English majors are demanded to take the English subject. In addition, to gain thecertificates of TEM 4 and TEM 8, they need to master almost 6000 words and 12000 wordsrespectively, while to obtain certificates CET (band 4) and CET (band 6), non-English majorlearners must grasp around 4200 and 5500 words respectively. As a result, it has become moreand more difficult for students to learn English especially the mass English words, as well asfor teachers to pass on knowledge and learning skills to their students. At times, studentsalways make a rash of complaints about remembering and forgetting. A number of troublesstill exist in the respect of vocabulary teaching and study.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
It is clear that vocabulary is extremely significant for language learning. A famous scholar named Nation (2001:2) mentioned in his book that either researchers or so manylearners consider vocabulary as the key factor for language and that without enough words,the process of learning English will surely be hindered. Moreover, compared with the juniorand senior high middle school at which students are allowed to master only one centremeaning of a word, college students must recite the new word’s core meaning as well as otherrelated meanings to pass the exams successfully.
