Chapter Four Data Analysis

Before analyzing the Evaluation in Problem-Solution Pattern from themacro-perspective, micro-perspective and the relationship with the Appraisal Theory, thedata used in this paper are analyzed by using the method that Hoey has been used. So thesamples are chosen mainly focusing on the disaster itself from the perspectives of whereit occurs, how it happens, how it influences the people or the environment, and howpeople react to it, not mainly focusing on how to solve the problem or how to rescuepeople. So, the hard news just are chosen from the meaning of the title, like the titles of“Earthquake strikes south of Turkey”, “6.3-magnitude earthquake strikes off Indonesia”,“New earthquake strikes hard-hit Pakistan”, “Floods kill dozens in eastern India”,“Floods hit northern India, killing 150” and so on. All the hard news are collected fromthe authoritative newspapers. The major topic of the hard news is about the naturaldisasters such as flood, earthquake, hurricane, volcano, and typhoon. Then all the hardnews and the data from the hard news are analyzed deeply. The following analyses arebased on the 50 hard news.

Conclusion

This paper conducted the Evaluation element in the Problem-Solution Pattern inEnglish hard news. 50 pieces of English hard news are collected from authoritativenewspapers abroad, such as New York Times, CNN and the Guardian, as the researchdata. English hard news can be thought as a particular genre. These 50 pieces of Englishhard news are all about disaster. Then these 50 pieces of English hard news are analyzedfrom two perspectives, macro-perspective and micro-perspective, with the theory ofProblem-Solution Pattern. The analysis from the macro-perspective concludes thefrequency analysis of each element in the Problem-Solution Pattern and the analysis ofthe Evaluation element. The analysis from the micro-perspective concludes the analysisof clause relation, the analysis of lexical signals, and the analysis of grammatical features.This paper also analyzed the Appraisal Theory in the Evaluation element in Engagement,Graduation and Attitude.From the macro perspective, first, in the hard news, the Evaluation element is theobligatory element.
