Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
With the existing social situation of low fertility and accelerating populationaging, the National Population and Planning points out the need to ‘carry out thefamily planning policy’. Meanwhile some scholars also agree or explicitly support tocarry out the two-child policy. ‘Situation of Population Change and PopulationPolicy Adjustment’ report issued by Chinese Development Research Foundationespecially proposes that recent birth policy adjustment scheme should beimplemented step by step until the national implementation of ‘two-child policy’.This policy gives every couple a chance to have more than one baby and every onlychild an opportunity to have a lifetime company. However, a piece of news rings analarm bell for all of us. A 14-year-old girl threatened to commit suicide unless hermom did not give birth to her little sister or brother. To be honest, there is no right orwrong in this incident. Children are more like animals, most of what they do justcomes from instinct. The girl felt unsafe and threatened by a second child. That is thereason she did this, to protect herself. Then who should be to blame for this incident?And what implications can we get from it? In my opinion, it is the unsuccessfulcommunication between children and parents that causes this tragedy.Family life is in fact not only full of love and happiness but also conflicts andunexpected matters. Raising children and teaching them how to adapt to the world isalways an uneasy task for both parents and teachers. Many questions should beovercome during the education. E.g. How to keep the harmony of a family? How doparents keep the peace between children after adopting the ‘two-child policy’? Themost simple and practical way is certainly through language. According to Tannenand many other scholars, family is the cradle of verbal discourse and the originalplace where all daily conversations take place. The objects on which the scholarsstudy before are mostly the discourse at work place or other official situations.Family talk has always been neglected. Also, as a dispensable part of life, peopleusually regard conflict talk as something negative, meaningless and useless.However, this is not practically true.

1.2 Significance of the Study
As for conflict talk, the study has always been about the conflict discoursehappening at work place or some official situations. Parent-child conflict, as is quiteprivate and difficult to collect, has always been an untouched area. Even though, afew scholars have shown some interest in it, the studies are only from theperspective of memetics, relevance theory, adaption theory and discourse analysisinstead of interpersonal meaning. According to Halliday, interpersonal meaning ismainly realized through mood and modality system. Other scholars later completethe mechanism by adding person system to the picture. The above three tools allfunction together to help the speaker to maintain his relationship with the listenerand assign roles to the listener. This function cannot be more helpful for parents toeducate their children. The parents always want to maintain a harmoniousrelationship and communicate with their children efficiently. What’s more, they wantto assign roles to their children as well, such as the best student in the class, thenumber one in the math competition, a good player in the football match.
