CHAPTER ONE   INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Present Study 
Nowadays,  it  seems  that  the  meaning  of  the  word  ‘communication’  is misunderstood by many teachers and students and they tend to focus on speaking and listening activities only.  Actually, in the field of EFL (English as Foreign Language) in China, more and more  teachers  of  English  have  realized  that  the  teaching  of  reading  is  inevitably important.  More  significantly,  reading  process  is  thought  to  be  a  psychological process  of  absorbing  and  transforming  information  rather  than  mechanically  calling the  learned  information  from  the  printed  pages  and  then  making  corresponding multiple choices.  The ability for reading is acknowledged to be a prior language skill. Reading has always  been  the  focus  of  English  instruction  in  China;  so  far  the  result  is  not  so satisfactory (as revealed in the results of the nation-wide English matriculation test). The ability to read critically is definitely an important part of an individual’s foreign language education and plays a vital role in the intellectual development of the young minds.  As  a  matter  of  fact,  English  teachers,  following  traditional  teaching  methods, would  often  spend  a  large  amount  of  time  in  teaching,  reviewing  and  practicing reading  comprehension  and  reading  abilities.  Students  are  mainly  paying  great attention to the mechanical memorization of grammatical rules and new words.

1.2 Purpose of the Present Study 
There  still  exists  a  lack  of  emphasis  in  the  cultivation  of  students'  extensive reading  and  critical  reading  in  China's  EFL  teaching.  Some  of  the  students  even consider extensive reading as “waste of time”, because they think that it has little to do with the results of their College English test (CET) Four or CET Six. The  inefficient  way  of  English  learning  is  a  common  phenomenon  for  college students,  which  is  reflected  in  their  ineffective  reading  skills  and  poor  scores  in reading  comprehension.  Therefore,  it  is  necessary  for  researchers  to  make investigations  into  students’  reading  process,  which  gives  rise  to  studies  on  reading abilities. Critical  reading  abilities  are  consciously  selected  by  learners  to  improve  their reading comprehension and reading proficiency.
