Chapter Four Factors Contribute to Students Positive Attitude

After recording the interview data in my cell phone, it took me five days totranscribe all the recordings. Although this process was time-consuming andexhausting, it helped me better understand my data, which could further benefit mydata coding process. All of my findings were based on the repeatedly study andanalysis of all the printed transcription. The total number of my respondent is 26,among which female takes up 17, male only 9. Considering the privacy andconfidentiality of the subjects, I have used the alphanumeric convention to stand foreach person rather than using their names. Thus, the male participants are identified asM1, M2, M3, etc and the female ones as F1, F2, F3, etc. Before getting to ourinterview, I reiterated the purpose of my study and expressed my appreciation in orderto make them say as much as they could in our conversation. Actually, the wholeprocess was like a free conversation all concerning about the personal experience ofEnglish learning as they have been requested. For this, I was deeply grateful for theirtrust and cooperation. As many of my questions need my respondents to search for thememories of English learning in their middle schools and even their primary schools,I would be patient and keep silent to give them some time to think over my questions.It is totally understandable that it is hard to express any complaints to the teacherswho are teaching you for Chinese students. So when my participants felt reluctant toexpress complaints about the status quo of their oral classes, I would encourage andpush them to speak out their true feelings and I could always get more genuineinformation.

Conclusion

In the previous sections, the author started the paper with the introduction partand introduced the purpose of the study with the brief outline of the whole thesis. Inthe second part, a literature review including the review of communicative languageteaching in both China and abroad with its emphasis on the studies of exploration tothe failure of this method in China. The most important part went to the speakingresearches that are relevant to my study home and abroad. The third part stated theresearch methods and the specific procedures. According to the purpose of the study,the author regards this study as a grounded theory study by the methods of classobservation and intensive interview. The data analysis was strictly conducted step bystep by the requests of grounded theory including open coding, axial coding, selectivecoding and memo writing. Followed by the data analysis section, an emergent theorywas emerged. In this theory, enjoying western culture, appreciating English andlearners’ previous learning experience could facilitate students to develop theirspeaking skills. After developing their speaking skills, the students could takeadvantages in their career and lives, and also could enhance their sense of superiority.All the elements above promote them to hold positive attitude towards CLT method inoral English classes. In the following section, in order to give details about how thesefactors affect learners’ behavior in the oral English classes, the author will illustratethese factors one by one.
