摘要:本文是英语语言学论文,本研究的对象为湖南省某高校大一及大三两个年级 128 名英语专业学生,通过限时作文的方式收集语料,并通过免费检索软件 Ant Conc 3.4.4 以及统计软件SPSS 19.0 对数据进行检索分析。
p;grammar. We can apply Frederick’s classification to the study of nominalization, therefore, as of the researching approach, there are internal approach and external approach towards nominalization. Internal approach begins the research of the formation of nominalization with its internal structure or internal syntactic relationship, trying to find out the formulae or rules that explain the formation of all or the vast majority of nominalizations. But those attempts ignore the pragmatic and semantic aspects of nominalization. Scholars adopting the internal approach usually come from Formalist’s school, including Structuralism and Transformational-Generative Grammar, the latter yielding much more fruitful results.

Chapter Two
methodology
The previous chapter presents relevant literature on the research of nominalization which serves as the theoretical foundation for the current study. This part will have its focus on the methodology of this study, which includes research questions, introduction about the subjects and the tools which will be used for retrieving and calculation. In this study, qualitative methods will also be involved, as some of the sample writings will be examined to check whether nominalization fulfills its due function.
2.1 Research Questions
The current study concentrates on the phenomenon of nominalization in Chinese English majors’ writings so as to reveal the potential relationship between the frequency of nominalization and English proficiency as well as the characteristic of the use of nominalization by Chinese EFL learners. The research questions in the present study are dissected in the following: Question 1: Do juniors adopt nominalization more frequently than freshmen in their writings? Question 2: What are the characteristics in the use of nominalization by freshmen and juniors? Question 3: Do the instances of nominalization in English majors’ writings perform their due functions? And what are the problems involved?

2.2 Participants
The participants of the current study are all English majors from Huaihua University, who come from four classes (two from the first grade, the other two from the third year). Altogether, the subjects involved in this research are 68 freshmen and 64 juniors, and no explicit training on nominalization was given to them prior to the research.
