selected  from  each  grade  as  the  corpus  for  this  study.  In  this  paper,  we  boldly  assume the  overall  English  proficiency  of  the  juniors  is  higher  than  that  of  freshmen.  The reasons  for  such  an  assumption  are  as  follows.  Firstly,  in  recent  three  years,  the enrollment  scores  for  freshmen  English  majors  in  Huaihua  University  keeps  stable,  so we  assume  that  the  English  proficiency  of  the  freshmen  are  almost  at  the  same  level. Secondly,  with  the  academic  progress,  junior  students  have  undergone  special  training for TEM-4, and a majority of them have passed the test, thus their English proficiency is surely  much  higher  than  that  of  freshmen.  Thirdly,  according  to  Wen  Qiufang  et  al. (2003),  the  average  length  of  sentences  and  single  words  in  the  writing  could  to  a certain  extent  reflect  the  subjects’  overall  English  proficiency.  Therefore,  in  order  to testify whether the junior students could represent the higher level and the freshmen the lower level, a statistical analysis of the above two parameters in the sample writings are made, as shown in the following table.
