Chapter 5 Reconstruction of Translational Norms of the Two Chinese Versions of The Magician’s Nephew
Translational norms serve as the guidance and constraints of the translation behaviours. However, they are invisible and cannot be touched. Researchers explore and reconstruct norms by studying the translated texts and the related textual and extratextual factors. In this chapter, the author is going to conduct a comparative analysis of the British children’s literature The Magician’s Nephew and its two Chinese translation versions and reconstruct the preliminary norms, initial norms and operational norms behind the two translations, trying to seek out the norms of Chinese translation of foreign contemporary children’s literature.

This series consists of seven books which are presented in order of original publication date as follows: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950), Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia (1951), The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952), The Silver Chair (1953), The Horse and His Boy (1954), The Magician’s Nephew (1955) and The Last Battle (1956). The story is set in the fictional realm of Narnia and spans the entire
