Chapter ThreeSecular Body:Moral Dilemma and Pursuing MoralPerfection
A.Secular Body:Moral Dilemma
In the earthly world, the body perishes with the passage of time, but the body stillbears the spiritual thought and social order of the age in which it lives.During theRenaissance, the emergence and demise of the body, life, and death were commontopics of philosophical, moral, and religious discussion. This is especially true inSpenser’s Faerie Queene. The body of the virtuous knight has its own special moralsignificance. As a microcosm of the epic poem, the adventures of Redcrosse and Unain Book 1 have been interpreted differently by scholars. From Robert Kellogg’s pointof view:
“Redcrosse’s quest, considered as a whole,is most immediately understood as anallegory of the making of a Protestant saint, both the fall into sin once separated fromChristian truth, and the gradual restoration, through the intervention of grace and theloving guidance of the holy church,to spiritual health, wholeness, and conformity to theimage of Christ”(1544)1.
As a special space,Redcrosse’s body is closely linked to the geographical space ofthe country and nation, and an individual often refers to the whole nation as well.Inthe first book,Redcrosse learns his earlier history until canto ten 65–6:he is descendedfrom the Saxon kings who conquered Britain, and was stolen in infancy by a fairy whohid him in a furrow in Faerie Land where he was discovered by a plowman and raised‘in ploughmans state to byde.’And“Georgos he thee gave to name”;and he“SaintGeorge shalt called bee,Saint George of mery England, the signe of victoree”(I.x.65-6),the patron saint of England. In fact,St.George is the symbol of England, and Spenser uses the body of Redcrosse as the national geographical space and hisadventure to write a moral allegory of England.
Conclusion
Spenser is one of the poets and writers who wrote about the body most vividly, characteristically, and allegorically in the history of literature.Although the epic waseventually completed in only six volumes,it has left a rich resource for readers andlater poets and writers. The completed volumes involve numerous bodies andcombined with the domestic and international political, economic, cultural, andreligious situations and factors of the poet’s time,a single character’s body maycontain multiple allegories. We cannot exhaust the allegories behind each body, but wecan only make simple divisions and try to understand, speculate about and analyzethem in conjunction with theoretical and historical facts.
The many bodies Spenser portrays can be roughly divided into three categories:the holy and pure bodies, the secular bodies, and the foul bodies, each of whichcontains different moral allegories. The holy and pure bodies embody religious andethical morals such as chastity, charity, and temperance, and these bodies reflect theorder of macrocosmos, exhibit a state of harmony, and embody divine grace.Thesecular body,on the other hand,is closer to the eternally changing characteristics of theworld below the moon, and is relatively more prone to downward movement, thusexhibiting a greater susceptibility to temptation and moral dilemmas. But the secularbody can hav本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
