In the West,ethical research on literary works has a long history.Its scientifictheory can be traced back to the ancient Greek period.Early philosophers Plato,Aristotle,Grass,etc.,all used ethical,literary theory to beautify literature.Among them,Plato uses an approach of moral criticism to criticize the literature.He evaluates thequality of literature based on the moral codes of his times(Nie 12).Horace especiallyemphasizes the function of the literature,which is edutainment(Yang 74).AndAristotle’s literature view,which is closer to what we advance as ethical literarycriticism is mainly expressed in his Poetic.This book is the earliest academic work inthe history of literary criticism and is also a great practice of literary criticism.Thefundamental research works on literary ethics did not appear until the mid and late 19thcenturies.During this period,a series of works with the title of academic ethicsappeared.Among them,Ralph Waldo Emerson’s speech Literary Ethics and White’s InLiterature and Ethics had significant influence.Literature and Ethics were published in1853,including 12 papers by Charles White.It comprehensively discussed the teachingand moral functions of literature from the angles of religion,philosophy,and ethics(Charles 100).In the second half of the 19th century,western research on literary ethics continued to develop in-depth,and a series of representative academic works werepublished,such as:Ethics and Aesthetics of Modern Poetry,Ethics of Modern Fictionand Essays on Literature and Ethics,Ethics of Literature and Art,Ethics of Literature,etc.(Yang 2).

1.2 Main Terms of Ethical Literary Criticism

There are many terms in the field of moral criticism.Among them,morality,ethicaltaboo,ethical consciousness,ethical identity,ethical environment,ethical selection,ethical embarrassment,ethical values,and ethical dilemma are the core terms of ethicalliterary criticism.In contrast,ethical environment,ethical selection,and ethicalconsciousness are essential terms and core concepts in literary ethics criticism,and thefollowing discussion will be based on them.This section is an overview of these threeterms.

1.2.1 Ethical Environment
