Therefore, the research on stance adverbials in academic papers can not only make learners aware of the importance of stance adverbials but also improve the practical value of stance-related theories to a certain extent. 

Chapter Two  Literature Review

2.1 Concepts of stance adverbials

Since the concept stance was first put forward, different scholars have used different labels to interpret it. The definitions of stance by different researchers share common ground, but there are also subtle differences. This section sorts out the development of stance adverbials, including the definition of stance and the classification of stance adverbials, so as to select the working definition and classification framework suitable for the present study.

2.1.1 Definitions of stance

In academic writing, stance can not only express the author’s acceptance of the meaning of the proposition but also convey the author’s point of view and standpoint. In scientific research, the use of appropriate stance adverbials is very important for the whole research. Many scholars have conducted in-depth studies on the expression of stance using different terms and definitions. Table 2.1 shows the terms related to stance and their definitions. 

2.2 Previous research on stance adverbials

Since the end of the 20th century, stance adverbials have been studied by many scholars at home and abroad, which has become a hot research topic in the academic community. Because different researchers start from different perspectives and adopt different methods and corpora, it is necessary to sort out the domestic and foreign researches on stance adverbials.

2.2.1 Research on stance adverbials abroad

The notion of stance was first put forward by Biber and Finegan (1988). They first group stance adverbials into six classes according to their semantic fields and then use a statistical technique called cluster analysis to discover their discourse functions. In their study, Biber and Finegan find that two of these classes (honestly adverbials and amazingly adverbials) are used less common and are less important in defining stance styles (1988: 30). Besides, through cluster analysis, the result shows that the discourse functions of stance adverbials are different from the functions suggested by their literal meanings, and they identify eight stance styles including “Cautious”, “Secluded from Dispute”, and “Faceless” (1988: 1).
