In The Gravedigger's Daughter,Joyce Carol Oates depicts the psychological crisis ofRebecca,a Jewish descendant in the United States.The dilemma of survival leads topsychological distortion,compelling Rebecca to fall into the inferiority complex involuntarily.Rebecca's inferiority complex is the epitome of the unsound psychological state of the Jewishpeople who immigrated to the United States.

This thesis analyzes the main character Rebecca in light of Adler's inferiority complexand psychological compensation mechanism in his Individual Psychology theory.After athorough examination of Rebecca's inferiority complex in the novel,it's noticeable thatRebecca's behavior manifests characteristics of avoiding life style and manifestations ofneurosis,including passive obedience,inner unease and self-denial.Firstly,she was subject tothe control of her father and husband under the ideology of patriarchy,that was,women wereborn inferior to men.What's more,she could do nothing but cater to the mainstream aestheticvalues in the face of cultural hegemony.Secondly,the inferiority complex caused Rebecca tosuffer from inner unease.When she was under great pressure,she would feel excessivelynervous and even had repeated hallucinations.And strong sense of inferiority made Rebeccaalways in a state of unease,holding deep mistrust of men's sincere love.Thirdly,Rebecca hada deep sense of inferiority on Jewish culture,female identity and family background.So shedenied her Jewish identity and self-value,believing that she didn't deserve anything good.Rebecca suffered a lot of pain for most of her life.All her retreated and negativemanifestations were due to the influence of inferiority complex,which hindered the healthydevelopment of her psychology.
