1.2 Purposes and significance
E-C translation of long and complicated sentences is one of the bottlenecks thatlanguishes and pinches many translators. The primary reason is translators wouldbecome dizzy and puzzled when encountering such long, redundant and especiallycomplicated sentences in legal English texts where long sentence with more than ahundred words is the most frequently seen case. This psychological barrier is hard toovercome especially for green hands in legal translation. Secondly, the understandingof lexicon in legal English is another challenge, being unfamiliar with theterminologies, words with special meaning or ancient words used in legal texts willdefinitely lead to inaccurate or even wrong translation. The last impeding and mostcritical factor is the lack of translation strategy for the translation of long sentences inlegal texts, such as lacking a integral realization of the types of long legal sentencesand the modifying elements constituting the whole sentence, resulting in theincapability to translate such complicated sentences. And focus will be put on the thirdpoints in this paper. Legal texts, however, directly deals with specific rights andobligations of the parties and even a small error will lead to the arising of legaldisputes or losses of parties because of the altering of legal relationships. Therefore,long and complicated sentences, which mainly compose almost all legal English texts,shall be attached with great attention and regarded as an important problem to betackled. In this thesis, long sentences in legal English are classified into four differenttypes, and specific methods of translation based on the refinement of the translation oflong sentences in ordinary texts, are given through analysis of different categories oflong sentences, which is of great and proactive significance to the development oflegal English translation.

Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 The existing studies of E-C translation of legal English
Legal English translation has undergone a relative long development inEnglish-speaking countries belonging to the common law system, which has much todo with the comprehensive and highly developed legal system, the thinking pattern ofvaluing relationship of rights and duties between individuals as well as people’sstrong legal awareness. While in modern china, though the translation of legal Englishhas started to develop in the 1940s, yet influenced by the seclusion to the outside worldand the concept of living in “a big family”, Chinese don’t have a clear identification ofthe legal relationship between them and thus their legal consciousness is comparativelyrather weak and there remained much room for the improvement of legal system at thattime. After the foundation of PRC, especially the implementation of the opening to theoutside world, under the policy of “governing the country by law”, china has seen arapid development of its legal system and the law has penetrated to every walk ofpeople’s life.
