Conclusion

The long sentences featuring English legal texts have been widely recognized asthe bottleneck which frequently challenges legal translators in doing such translation.It is of vital importance to be conscious of the characteristics of long legal sentencesand respective factors of the four types of it. A good translation of long legal sentencesrequires not only bilingual capacities but also a good knowledge of the law. In thisthesis, based on the translation principle of “faithfulness, expressiveness andcloseness” proposed by Liu Zhongde, combing with a careful exploration on featuresof legal English, the author sums up four types of long sentences which appear mostfrequently in English legal texts, that is, adverbial clauses, attributive clauses andparallel structures as well as compound clauses, then the thesis proceeds to deal withanalyzing in details the features of such sentences in the purpose of giving reader acomprehensive understanding of the sentence structure and stylistic characteristics ofeach type. In Chapter 4, the core of the thesis, some specific translation methods basedon practical experience are put forward correspondingly. With translation strategiesdeveloped and proposed under the principle of “faithfulness, expressiveness andcloseness”, the complexity in such translation can be relieved and removed to someextent.
