ABSTRACT

    This paper, combining the German functional translation theory raised by Katharina Reiss, Hans Vermeer and Holz-Manttari, agrees and upholds that translating is an interlingual and intercultural action, we must, besides carefully studying those factors at linguistic level, study extra-linguistic factors, namely, cultural factors which are closely related to languages. Translating, as an action, should give prominence to purposefulness. The translating objects are for the requirements on the part of TL readers who mainly determines the purpose of translating. Translations would be significant on the condition that the needs of TL readers are met maximally. Functonal translation theory stresses the purposefulness, communicativeness and interculturalness of translational actions or events. Compared with the traditional linguistic approaches, functional approaches to translating appear to be more dynamic. For lack of space, this paper, by confining itself to Chinese-English (C-E) translating, carries out concrete applications with the combination of functional translation theory for the purpose of giving prominence to intercultural communication, and expects to establish a new effective functional translating mechanism oriented in culture. This paper is altogether composed of eight parts as follows:
     1. Introduction ushers in questions about translating elements. Concrete examples of C-E translation are cited so that the threshold to the theme becomes conspicuous.
     2. Chapter I introduces the historical background and the evolution of functional translation theory, the German representative functionalists, the classification of linguistic functions, the drawbacks of linguistic school of translation, states the notion of functional translation theory, the functional translation principles, a scant of comparison between Yan Fu’s translation criteria and the functional ones, etc.  
     3. Chapter II analyzes the roles in translating process and interprets the essence of translating.
     4. In Chapter III the linguistic and functional views about translation or translating are introduced of those famous translators or translation theorists who interpret the definition of translation and the insights to the interpretation of translation are given.
     5. Chapter IV concerns the relationship between language and culture, communication and culture and how to transform culture linguistically, that is, it concerns how to comprehend the extensiveness and specificity of culture. This chapter also has something to do with some pragmatic aspects regarding translation or translating.
     6. In this part, we analyze and inquire into the applicability and significance of the culture-oriented functional approaches to translating.
     7. Chapter VI elaborates the concrete applications under the macro guidance of functional translation approaches and tries to prove the applicability and supervising significance of this theory.
     8. Conclusion. This paper concludes that culture-oriented functional approaches to translating broadens people’s vision and deepens people’s awareness of translation.
