5 Conclusion结论
Women in the old world had less rights than men did, they were only regarded as subsidiaries of men, had obligation and responsibility to stay at home to keep the house in order. But they never stopped to fight for equal rights, they searched to develop their artistic talent, struggled to work outside and make money. Women united together to open a new world with self-respect, independence, freedom, and gradually established the embryo of new period women.
In this paper, the author explored Louis May Alcott’s masterpiece Little Women, from the feminism perspective. The analysis of Little Women included the background information and the phenomena of women spirit in the 19th centuryAmerica, as women could be divided into true women and new women. The March sisters grew up during the Civil War, during the time when the new women were defined by the mainstream media as a revolutionary social ideal in the latter half of the 19th century, and that defined women as economically independent, physically adept, and mentally acute, and the ability to work, study and socialize on a part with men. In the novel, Alcott set the March sisters as the example, presented the new woman ideology in great sense by describe Jo’s and Amy’s self-reliance, self-individualism, self-assertion in their respective careers and lives. Besides, by introducing the women’s movement including the new woman ideology, feminist reform of the March sisters especially Jo and Amy, the images of new time women were clearly shown. And the reasons why the sisters had feminist spirit were fully discussed. The girls were pioneers of feminism, however, the spirit was not only their natural instincts, as circumstance played an important part in life. They were also greatly affected by their parents, who gave the sisters the freedom to think and practice. And the girls’ mutual influence gave them the space to follow the other and gradually change one another.
However, the influence of the March is a new aspect of the study. As many scholars believed Jo and Amy were of the most feminist spirit and they were so as the result of the feminist pioneer of Alcott herself and the 19th century new women movement, a new kind of opinion came into being as the sisters were highly affected by their parents. Moreover, the harmonious atmosphere among the sister, the reciprocal coverage of sisterhood promoted Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth to go further on the feminism road.
In conclusion, by analyzing the stories happened to the sister
