ews, not only on the work of the aid organisations operating within the community, but also on the decisions made by Ugandan politicians in Kampala that may impact on their lives. Stories from the villages in the Katine region are contextualised through additional reports on Uganda's
history and politics, and analysis of wider issues such as international aid and development. Interactive maps allow visitors to take a virtual tour of the Katine region, making the user experience more participatory and fun, and the school resource section includes interactive lesson plans to get children involved in the project.
'Women and the dangers of childbirth in Katine' is an example of a Katine story that comprises four complimentary elements: a video report following Alice Amucu and Mary Amulo as they prepare for the birth of their babies; a text case study of Mary Amulo's struggle as she faces post-natal medical difficulties which she cannot afford to have treated; a gallery of nine photographs taken of the maternity hospital, emphasising the basic facilities and chronic lack of essential medical supplies; and a text article about problems facing traditional birth attendants who deliver the babies in Katine. Each element of the story stands alone as a story in and of itself, but also compliments the other elements without repeating any information. This is typical of the project - all elements compliment eachother to give an in-depth and multifaceted view of life in the Katine region.
结论-Conclusion
It is becoming ever more necessary for traditional media organisations to embrace multimedia elements, as the rise of social media platforms and citizen journalism - which are both proponents of and dependent upon multimediality - threaten to usurp newspapers and broadcasters as the primary disseminators of information. While the Guardian's Katine project has millions of pounds in funding to support it, it is truly a poignant example of how traditional media organisations can bring stories from small communities to the attention of a national or global audience, and demonstrates the potential of multimedia to capture a multifaceted view of an issue in a way that appeals to many and can be more powerful as a communication tool than one medium alone.
