Conclusion


Chinese EFL learners tend to overuse certain types of engagement devicessuch as personal pronouns and, in particular, inclusive we. This phenomenon implies thatChinese students are accustomed to Chinese ways of thinking and easily affected byChinese culture of collectivism in their essay writing. This is understandable since moststudents acquire English in a non-native environment with little exposure of the foreignlanguage and cultures. Therefore, teachers should introduce the relevant knowledge onSino-American cultural differences to help them overcome the negative impacts of mothertongue on their English argumentative writing. corpus can be adopted in the instruction of English. Although textbooks arecomposed by quality articles selected by authorizes in English teaching, they are limited innumber and can’t provide enough pragmatic examples. One of the advantages of corpus isthat students can get easy access to a large number of data in terms of certain languagephenomenon and the contexts of words. With the aid of corpus, teachers can makecomparison of the essays of Chinese students and those of native students to find the majordifferences in the use of engagement devices, thus making the instruction more effective.
Another thing is that the author has offered possible reasons for the overuse orunderuse of some REMs, but this is only a descriptive study based on corpus data. Nointerviews or other forms of questioning have been made due to limited time anddifficulties in finding the authors of all these essays.For further studies, details of the 5 engagement devices can be further investigatedsystematically, which may provide more insightful implications about these readerengagement markers. Moreover. This thesis is primarily a descriptive study. There is still alot of work to do on the use of REMs in order to find the influence of first languagetransfer and cultural influences on Chinese EFL learners’ essay writing.
