Chapter Two literature review

2.1 Previous Studies of Book Review
Given that the previous researches seldom study biographical book review, this thesismainly focuses on the study of book reviews for literature review. This chapter will reviewthe previous studies of book reviews at home and abroad. Besides, the main studiesconcerning the theory of this thesis and the writer-reader interaction at home and abroadare summarized, so as to lay a solid theoretic foundation for latter analysis in the followingsections. Book Reviews draw people's attention abroad. Hyland (2000) stressed on theimportance of book review in his paper and pointed out studies on book reviews can dateback to 2000 years but book review developed into a modem genre less than half a centuryago. Besides, he emphasized that book reviews help facilitate the spread of knowledge andenhance the social cohesiveness of academic communities. He investigated the frequenciesand patterns of praise and criticism in book reviews based on a corpus of 160 book reviewscovering several different subjects. He also studied the dimensions of evaluation, findingthat praise was global，while criticism was often directed at specific content and textualfeatures. Like Hyland, Motta-Roth (1995) explored the special characteristics of the genreof book review by analyzing the rhetorical structure and organization of book reviews atthe macro-linguistic level based on the corpus of 180 book reviews. He summarized therhetorical moves and found that there are some regularity of these book reviews in terms ofinformation structure, content and function. Hunston (2000)，in her “Evaluation and thePlanes of Discourse; Status and Value in Persuasive Texts”，texts of different genres areselected by her and all the chosen texts share one thing in common，that is, being"characterized as having a persuasive function". The objective of Hunston is to explore theevaluative resources in those persuasive texts. Book Review is no exception.

2.2 Previous Studies of Appraisal Theory
The Appraisal framework outlined here has been developed within the traditionalSystemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1999). Martin first introduced Appraisalframework in the early 1990s. Its origin can be traced back to the research project of theNew South Wales Disadvantaged Schools Program，referred to as "Write it right",conducted in Australia in the 1990s，which researchers explored the literacy requirementsof the discourses of science, technology, the media, history, English literature studies,geography and the visual arts.More recently White (2001) has devoted effort to refining the system. Some othertheorists have worked on appraisal, including Eggins and Slade (1997), Rothery andStenglin (2000).
