摘要:In the current study, the timed argumentative writings by Chinese college Englishmajors are used as the research corpus and they are compared with the equivalent writingswritten by native college students in the reference corpus.
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of this Study
Bacon once put forward that writing makes "an exact man,,,namely,writing can helpimprove the precision of English use, and in addition,it can elevate one's logical thinkingand analytical ability (Ding et a/.,1994). As we all know,writing is the best reflection of alanguage learner's comprehensive linguistic competence among the five basic skills oflistening,speaking, reading, writing and translating. In 1985,Swain proposedcomprehensible output hypothesis, which demonstrates language output including writingis beneficial to improve fluency and accuracy of L2 learners.As mentioned in his book,Scott (2006: 56) considered keyness as "a mostly textualquality", and furthermore, it can be seen as a quality that some words have in a certain textor texts,suggesting that they are significant and they can reflect what the text is reallyabout,avoiding trivia,verbiage and unimportant details. Some scholars have alreadyworked on the relevant issues. For instance, William (1976, 1983) pioneered in identifying“cultural keywords" by his intellectual intuition, and then Stubbs (2002) followed him bymeans of corpus method.Kintsch and van Dijk (1978) came up with a hierarchy of keyness by prepositionalanalysis of text. The propositions of a text naturally fall into a hierarchy of prominence thatreflects their keyness, i.e. the method identifies the most important propositions fromseveral ones in the sense that they are linked to most of all in the text (Kintsch & van Dijk 1978: 369). Hoey (1991) tackled this issue by sentences, and he sought out the elementsthat are most linked. A link is a repetition of some kind in the aspect of conceptual basis,such as grammatical variants, synonyms, hyponyms, meronyms and antonyms of a word,not needing to be verbatim repetition. Both methods based on patterns of repetition helpidentify what the text is really about. The above briefly reviews the previous ways ofidentifying keywords or key items and the important roles they play in text prominence.

1.2 Purposes of this Study
In the current study, the timed argumentative writings by Chinese college Englishmajors are used as the research corpus and they are compared with the equivalent writingswritten by native college students in the Reference corpus. By utilizing WordSmith Tools5.0,it aims to find out the keyword use in the writings of Chinese English majors and therole that keywords play in the quality of text theme-prominence, which enriches ourunderstanding of the theme-prominence quality in Chinese English learners' writing from arelatively new perspective. Meanwhile,it is supposed to provide some pedagogicalimplications for improving the English proficiency of Chinese L2 learners in terms ofkeywords in writing.The present thesis concerns and will answer the following questions:
1. Are keywords adequately used in L2 learners,writing?
2. What is the distribution of keywords in L2 writing?
3. What is the relationship between the use of keywords and the quality ofL2 writing?
