5.1 Disadvantages of Traditional Teaching Methods in Advanced English
Advanced English course is a comprehensive professional curriculum for senior Englishmajors. According to the syllabus formulated by the Ministry of Higher Education, the mainobjective of high-grade College English teaching is to consolidate and improve students'comprehensive English language skills,develop students' interest in analyzing andappreciating the famous works and their logical thinking ability. But in the teaching practice,some teachers simply emphasize grammar and vocabulary and neglect the layout of the wholetext, so that students' ability of logical reasoning analysis and induction is poor and somestudents are just satisfied to understand the Chinese meaning of the text.In the reading comprehension test,students' ability to use cohesive devices in discourse isnot satisfactory and students have poor understanding about the surface structure of thediscourse. Students lack knowledge about the discourse and don't share similar backgroundknowledge and schema knowledge with the writer. Students don't have adequate reasoning andjudgment ability and they are not good at applying the text structure and context to solve theproblems during their reading. Their overall understanding of the text needs to be improved.The above analysis fully illustrates that the application of Systemic Functional Grammar inAdvanced English teaching is very important and urgent.

Conclusion


In this thesis, I make ideational analysis,interpersonal analysis and textual analysis aboutthe specific texts in Advanced English respectively. Textual meaning is realized by the thematicstructure. The theme-rheme structure aims at analyzing the semantic relations betweensentences,the process of message transmission and the way how the author develops the themeof the article. It enables the students to understand the author's range of subjects and hisorganization of the whole passage, that is,what the author wants to tell and how the plot ismoved forward. It helps to break the traditional teaching mode which always starts from thenew words and then to the whole passage and to establish the macro concept of reading,thusattracting students' attention from single words to the whole discourse, thereby overcoming thedrawbacks that students can't understand the passage due to new words.Ideational (Empirical) meaning is mainly embodied in the choice of the processes. Herethe processes are divided into six types; material process, mental process,relational process,behavioural process, verbal process and existential process.
