Chapter OneThe Crisis of the Jews

A.The Plague as a Challenge to Jews

At the beginning of the novel, the trigger of the story is introduced to us,which isthe appearance of the plague. In the early stages, there were no cases in the Jewishcommunity where the protagonist was located. However, with the radiation of theplague, this Newark community was eventually infected.Faced with the gradualoutbreak of the plague,Bucky was a stable and rallying force in the community.Just asthe meaning of the new name given to him by his grandfather implied,“Bucky, thename means tenacity, bravery, and determination”(Roth 23).Not only does he possessstrong vitality himself, but he also passes on this tenacity to the Jewish children whorepresent the future, leading them in physical exercise and teaching them the importance of cleanliness. He also warns the children to“maintain their determinationand physical strength and not let others manipulate them”(Roth 35).However,as theplague dramatically broke out,the children around Bucky gradually became infectedand died(Worboys 274).Even when he escaped to Indian Hill Summer Camp, hecould not escape the pursuit of the nemesis(Chen 3).Eventually,Bucky’s body wasalso invaded, and he even believed that he caused a greater degree of spread. In the end,Bucky even refused to live as a normal Jew and was immersed in the impact of theplague on himself for a long time.

This narrative focuses on the protagonist’s experience of the plague, which can beanalyzed in two stages based on the origin of the plague. The first stage is beforeBucky leaves the Jewish community to go to the Indian camp, during which the sourceof the plague is mainly external. As a stable“ghetto”community, the JewishWeequahic district where Bucky resides is initially unaware of the occurrence of theplague. However, the plague will not spare any Jewish community.“One afternoon inearly July, two small trucks drove into the dormitory street behind the school andstopped at the playground on the street. The trucks were full of Italians, all malestudents from East Side High School, aged fifteen to eighteen.

B.The Emergence of a Crisis of Faith

The above content explores the source, symptoms, and effects of the plague fromthe perspective of the protagonist, and points out the changes in Bucky’s handling ofthe plague. In Bucky’s handling of the plague,Jewish faith plays an important role. After Bucky’s physical crisis,he begins to lose himself in the identity and faith he hasalways pursued. He keeps asking those around him,“See,your God is not my God.Sodon’t bring him into my situation. He was too stingy with me.He spent too much timekilling children”(Roth 47).The novel explores the ways in which personal belief ischallenged and transformed in the face of tragedy.Bucky’s crisis of faith reflects thedeeper questions about the nature of God and human suffering. As the plague spreads,Bucky searches for answers and meaning in the face of tragedy. He turns to hiscommunity and his own inner resources to find the strength to endure and yet,he failed.Following Victoria Aarons,it can be argued that Roth’s early works“are preoccupiedwith Jewish identity[...and]Roth’s characters seize upon Jewish identity wit论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
