Chapter Two Literature review


2.1 Nature of reading and basic reading models
Reading is very important to get much information of science, culture or art and so on,therefore reading has been an important teaching and learning method in English education.Therefore, the nature of reading and different models of reading should be concernedbefore genre-based approach adopt into English reading. In modern society, most of people tend to expand knowledge and get information byreading ability. In second and foreign language learning, reading plays an important rolebecause people tend to regard reading as the only readily available method to get the targetlanguage. Reading helps the foreign learners easily know the world of literature, cultureand history.Generally speaking, reading process narrowly means reading with mouth and voice.However, reading doesn’t simply mean reading aloud. Reading is a complicated cognitiveand psychological process in which various subcomponents, such as decoding skills,knowledge of text structure, schematic knowledge, and processing strategies interactsimultaneously to help readers construct meaning from the texts (Carrel, 1985; Grabe,1991). The nature of reading has three features, including cognitive process, interactiveprocess and strategic process.

2.2 Review of genre theory and related research
Since the mid-1980s, the genre-based teaching approach has been applied in thelanguage teaching process. Then, the concept of genre and genre-based approach hasfocused on the research of L1 and L2 language teaching. In this part, the background ofgenre-based teaching approach which involves in the nature of genre, theory of genreanalysis and the three traditional approaches will be applied in teaching practice, and bediscussed in detail to offer a theoretical basis for the research. Traditionally, the nature of genre comes from the category of literature, sociology andrhetoric study. Until now, the nature of genre has associated with linguistic for threedecades. The nature of genre is controversial, so different linguists have different definitionof genre. The linguists such as Martin, Swales, and Bhatia show great interest inresearching the analysis of genre, and give their own definition of genre.Originally, Miller (1984), a new rhetorician, describes genre as a social action.According to him, genre guides readers how to participate in the actions of a community.Genres are not defined firmly, but defined by its textual regularities and the social purposeor action that is achieved.
