Byatt also shows women’s double consciousness in Possession. She uses two different narrative modes to present women’s objectivity and subjectivity. One is the third-person objective narration, the other is the first-person subjective narration. The former is through the novelist’s perspective to describe women’s external appearance and behavior, the latter is through the poet or scholar’s perspective to reveal women’s inner feelings and thoughts. For example, Christabel is described in the novel as a “pale, thin, intense” (Byatt 29) woman, she “wore her hair in a tight knot at the back of her head” (Byatt 29), she “had a small mouth and a long nose and large eyes” (Byatt 29).

Chapter Three Effects of Constructing Female Subjectivity
3.1 Reforming Free Choices
The choices that the characters make in the novel, and they affect their lives and relationships. Reforming free choices in A.S.Byatt’s Possession could mean different things for different characters, depending on their circumstances and motivations. For example, for the Victorian poets Randolph Henry Ash and Christabel LaMotte, reforming free choices could mean breaking free from the social and moral constraints that prevent them from pursuing their love and creativity openly and fully. They could choose to elope, to divorce their spouses, to publish their poems under their own names, or to reveal their affair to the public. However, these choices would also have serious consequences, such as losing their reputation, income, family, friends, or even their lives. Therefore, they have to balance their personal desires with their social responsibilities, and make compromises and sacrifices along the way.
Breaking free from the social and moral constraints that prevent them from pursuing their love and creativity openly and fully is one of the main themes of Byatt’s Possession. The novel explores how the Victorian poets Randolph Henry Ash and Christabel LaMotte struggle to express their unconventional and illicit passion, as well as their artistic vision, in a society that imposes strict norms and expectations on their gender roles, marital duties, and literary genres. The novel also shows how their modern counterparts, Roland Michell and Maud Bailey, face similar challenges in their academic and personal lives, as they try to balance their professional ambitions, ethical responsibilities, and emotional needs.
Conclusion
Women have sought gender equality for centuries, wanting equal opportunities in the workplace, a balanced relationship with men, and female subjectivity across generations. Despite the feminist movement’s progress, women are still not fully recognized as equal in identity and value, and they may face bias and abuse from men in the patriarchal society. Feminism has become more discussed and noticed with the feminist movemen本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
