Week X: Freedom is Responsibility for a Choice

1. In the book Existentialism is a Humanism, Sartre discusses what is the essence of freedom and the relationship between freedom and responsbility.
2. Sartre explains that we are radically free, and through out choices we create our own essence, making ourselves into the kind of person we are. There is no preexistence pattern of human nature to guide us in making our choices; each of us is utterly free to fashion our essence in any way we want. This freedom brings with it a burdensome responsibility. We alone are responsible for who we are. We want to choose what is valuable for us, but receive value only from the fact that we choose them. Our human predicament is that while we must choose. There is no ultimate basis on which to make our choices. We may attempt to avoid exercising our freedom by refusing to choose, but this in itself is a choice. We are condemned to be free.
3. If it is true, what is freedom? Where is freedom located? Existence is born, objective, not free. In terms of time, freedom exists after we are born. That means, freedom is related with the lifetime. The whole life is comprised of making choices and persistence of the choices. Every action we take is a choice. Why are we sitting here but not standing? Why are we going this way not that one? We even do not have time to think about it before we take actions. But that does not mean we have no choices before we take a quick action. A person can also choose to walk a long way home even if the apartment is on the next street. So does someone chooses not to follow others' will. So freedom exists in making choices.
But choice is not a choice if we do not stick with our choices. People make a choice because we want the result which the choice can bring us. The reason why a person choose the shortest path to walk home is he can spend the least time and energy being back home. We drive for 1 hour to go downtown for lunch because we want to satisfy ourselves or to meet someone downtown. There are motivations behind every action and choice. And the motivation is about living and meeting the 5 hierarchies of needs (Mslow's hierarchy of needs). People will find that some choices are very hard to stick with, because the choices need the desire and gigantic endeavour which pay for this. But life is a way and also the destination. People own it only when they use it. We can be who we want to be after we persist with the choices and get the satisfactory result. That is the nature of freedom, to do what we want to do. The key is to do, to make a choice. Hence freedom is the responsibility for the choice people make.
