or even chapter (Hoey 1991: 23)  Hoey in his discussion of the work of Philips 1985 (op.cit: 23) recognises how segments across whole texts, including chapters of a book, can ‘parallel’ the kind of linkages we see at sentence level. McCarthy’s (op.cit: 29) use of the word ‘dynamic’ in his discussion of the clause relational framework is useful here. He also points out that viewing text as dynamic is much more that just the ‘labelling’ of ‘illocutionary acts’ but rather “the relationships the textual segments enter into with one another” (op.cit: 29) McCarthy borrows the term ‘illocutionary acts’ from speech act theory which can be usefully applied to produce a summary of the force behind segments of text.
