From the experience of the Ford Motor Company, we can draw one conclusion that rational organization fits best with the then situation and different regions. It is not fixed at all, while changes all the time to adapt to the timely situation.

Case 2: Max Weber’s rational-legal organization

Max Weber recognized four of the main features for a rational-legal organization (Catherine, 2002).


l  The organization should be organized with formal effectiveness that is restricted by regulations. What’s more, each region should be distinguished from others.

l  The different functions of the organization are implemented by the several offices, and thus a hierarchy will be formed following certain rules and norms.

l  The administration staff is independent from the owners of the means of production

l  The activities of the administration department should be recorded in writing 。


Case 3: rational organization in hospital—Taylor’s rational organization

In some cases, it is hard for us to make a sense in certain organizations, especially when cross their rational boundaries. For example, a patient will not necessarily appear in the hospital unless when he is ill. However, Taylor insisted that all theses sense-making processes can be realized with rational management.

For rational organizations, they think and make decisions following some certain processes:Rational division, rational organ, and rational choice

Being a businessman in the United States, Taylor set his goal to explain how to better run an organization. Opposite to Fayol’s theory, Taylor focuses more on the relationships between manager and workers, and tries to achieve control over the employees (Catherine, 2011).


l  The main features for Taylor’s rational organization are:

l  There is always one best method for dealing with every matter

l  Coordination between job and worker is important

l  An inherent difference exists between management and workers

Therefore, Taylor’s rational organization theory distinguishes from others in that it always focuses more on the management and workers.


Case 4: Fayol and administrative management

In Fayol’s rational organization theory, the most important part is the administrative management. And Fayol also identified several of the key tasks with regarding to administrative management: controlling, organizing, coordination, planning, and commanding (David, 2010).


In the rational organization model, rationality is often and also referred to as instrumental or technical rationality. Where an organization sticks to the rational organization, it obeys to some of the core concepts in instrumental rationality.


The concept of efficiency governs supreme in the rational organization. According to the organization theory, organizations usually adopt the rational organization in an attempt to improve the efficiency of production. The rational organization itself is an efficient one.
