摘要:词汇在英语学习中起着非常重要的作用,词汇学习一直在学习英语的整个过程。然而,许多学生在词汇学习已经花费了大量的时间和精力,效果不明显。本文试图概念隐喻理论应用于英语词汇的学习,然后提出一些对学生学习英语的词汇,有效的建议。
1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research研究目的和意义
The study is intended to apply theory of conceptual metaphor to Englishvocabulary learning,and obtains implications for second language learners to studyvocabulary with conceptual metaphor theory from main four aspects which arepolysemy, idiom, cultural implications and words connection. So the key point whichthe paper will study is that from four aspects of conceptual metaphor applicationwhich are polysemy, idiom, cultural implications and words connection,to mark thereading passages in four levels of college English textbook, in order to find that thefrequency of conceptual metaphor is relative to different levels of English materials,and finally to find how they are related. The textbook adopted is from foreignlanguage teaching and research press, second edition, and the full name of thetextbook is New College English. The expected conclusion is that they are relative toeach other and the relationship is the frequency is up step by step from first level tofour level of the textbook. The paper also will make a empirical study throughcomparing the control class and the experimental class which to leam the vocabularywith conceptual metaphors' explanations, in order to test the hypothesis that thevocabulary learning based on the theory of conceptual metaphor can facilitate theEnglish vocabulary expansion and retention for second language learners. Throughthe research,the relationship explores the importance of introducing the theory ofconceptual metaphor into English vocabulary acquisition for Chinese learners.
1.3 Organization of the Research研究结构
The study contains seven parts. Chapter One is the introduction with a briefaccount of the motivation, purpose, significance,and organization of the study.Chapter Two is the literature review of metaphor including the traditional andcontemporary views on metaphor. Chapter three is comprehensive introduction ofconceptual metaphor theory with the definition,mechanism, classification andfeatures. Chapter Four is an overview of English vocabulary learning, and relatedstudies on conceptual metaphor and English vocabulary learning. Chapter Five isexperimental research which ranges from research question, methodology and resultsand data analysis.
