Abstract: 摘要
Vocabulary teaching is an integral part of English teaching. Its efficiency is directly related with the success or failure of communication---the ultimate goal of English teaching. As vocabulary has natural and close relationship with culture, it is a wise and efficient way to introduce cultural knowledge through vocabulary teaching. Cultural awareness is gradually cultivated in learning and absorbing cultural knowledge. The
thesis aims at exploring the methods of involving the cultivation of cultural awareness in vocabulary teaching. Providing explicit cultural instruction, giving special lectures on culture-loaded words, doing comparisons and contrasts, recommending reading and video materials are all effective methods can be adopted.

1.Introduction
English-speaking countries and China are quite different in
history, religion, values, social attitudes, political system, ways of life, etc. Therefore, there are many distinctions in their cultures. These distinctions reflect in language, especially in vocabulary which is one of the most important
constitutions of language. It is commonly believed that students may not master a foreign language well without using the vocabulary reasonably in real cultural environment. To let students use vocabulary exactly in culture, teachers should emphasize the cultivation of students’ cultural awareness in vocabulary teaching. However, in real teaching and learning settings, little attention is paid to the cultivation of cultural awareness. Leech pointed out that vocabulary has seven meanings (23). Among them, except the conceptual meaning, the other six meanings connect closely with cultural factors but in vocabulary teaching many teachers always stay in the conceptual meaning without giving a systematic introduction of other meanings. As a result, students’ potential power and learning interest are not aroused and they often neglect the special cultural context
