Chapter One Introduction
Preposition is one of the most important parts of speech in English, which can function asmodifiers and adverbials. Some people believe firmly that “English is a language ofprepositions,,. In Brown Corpus and LOB corpus, prepositions have occupied 12% of thewhole lexis respectively 229-238] According to Kennedy [1 229-238],there is at least onepreposition in any English text. Preposition can be seen as the most common word in English;however,for second language learners and foreign language learners, it is not easy to leam oracquire. Some scholars consider the acquisition hard is because the rich semantics menaning,strong grammatical function and variable use of prepositions ⑵.A corpus is a huge and organized set of text (normally store and process electronically). Acorpus can contain texts in one language or in more than languages, which can be used to doanalysis and assumption testing. The users can extract every sentence with keywords incorpus with the aid of retrieval programs. Linguistic phenomenon can be concluded throughstructural comparison and word analysis. The emergence of electronic corpus providesconvenient and feasibility for language research and teaching. The corpus means a lot toforeign language study because it can help to narrow the gap between the language ineveryday life and the one student learned in the class. The emergence of corpus has createdfavorable conditions for researchers to study prepositions. The concordance software can helpto get important statistics like frequency, collocations, type/token, MI scores, etc. Linguistsfrom all over the world carried out researches on preposition with the help of corpus andconcordance software. They find out that prepositions tend to collocate with fixed words andby analysing native's way of using English can help to guide English teaching ⑵.Interlanguage corpus can help to find out the reasons for the errors and differences whencomparing with native speakers [3、It is inevitable that learners would make mistakes in the process of learning a language.
Therefore, error analysis is valuable for learners to master the principle and process of a foreign language. The error analysis and interlanguage concept came up with Corder [43 isalways the main method of second language acquisition studies. With the establishment oflearners' corpus and the application of computer technique from the 1990s, corpus-basederror analysis has attracted an increasing number of researchers.This study is going to investigate Chinese students' acquisition of English prepositions fromthree different aspects. Moreover, a comparative analysis would be conducted in this study todemonstrate whether the learning environment would influence learners' second languageacquisition. In this study, data are gathered from two different groups of Chinese students -the first group is Chinese students who leam and use English at home^; and the second groupis Chinese students who study and live abroad for two years or more and they use English astheir second language〕. The former is labeled as EFL learners (English as their foreignlanguage) in this study, and the later as ESL learners (English as their second language).LOCNESS corpus is selected as the reference corpus in this study.
