Chapter One Introduction


This chapter is a brief introduction of the thesis. It starts with an illustration ofthe background of the present study. 1.1 Background of the study

There are mainly two parts of language knowledge: vocabulary knowledge andgrammar knowledge, which are closely related with each other. Vocabularyknowledge is the basis of grammar knowledge and is an important medium throughwhich people's meaning and information can be expressed and delivered. Actually,vocabulary knowledge is not only the basis of grammatical knowledge but also thebasis of language knowledge. All the L2 learners have to start to leam a second? -ilanguage from the acquisition of its, vocabulary knowledge. Therefore, vocabularyknowledge is of great significance for any language. McCarthy (1990) pointed outthat “no matter bow well the student learas grammar, no matter how successful thesounds of L2 are mastered, without words to express a wider range of meanings,communications in an L2 just cannot happen in any meaningful way,’. Therefore, theimportance of vocabulary acquisition to aW language learners, native or non-native, isself-evident. Wi}kins (1972) claimed that “without grammar, little can be conveyed;without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed". Schmitt (2001) also pointed out that"vocabulary is an essential building block of language.” Therefore, language learners'vocabulary knowledge has always been a solid foundation of their comprehensivelanguage abilities such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating.Without sufficient vocabulary, language skills can hardly be performed well.
In spite of its importance in SLA,the L2 vocabulary acquisition has beenneglected until the 1970s. Since then the researchers abroad have begun to payattention to vocabulary acquisition and they have made a lot of progress and publishedmany papers and books. The L2 vocabulary research received close attention in Chinain the early 1980s, a little later than the western countries. With the development ofthe research, a lot of linguists, researchers, and teachers have begun to realize thatwords are the basic structures to express people's ideas in verbal communication andvocabulary knowledge is an indispensable part of language proficiency. Therefore,more and more attention has been paid on L2 vocabulary knowledge and researchesabout L2 vocabulary knowledge have begun to increase.
The research at home and abroad has been developing towards all respects of L2vocabulary acquisition study such as vocabulary size assessment,the development ofvocabulary knowledge, mental lexicon, tests of vocabulary knowledge, vocabularyacquisition strategy and so on.
