Chapter 1 Introduction

语言是沟通的桥梁,英语是一个最为重要的媒介语言传输各种信息,来自全国各地的世界之窗。作为一个重要的技能,阅读是学习英语,用英语交流的踏脚石。因此,阅读在英语学习中起着相当重要的作用,为中国英语学习者把英语当作外语。对于中国大学生的机会,面对面沟通的母语是英语的人是很有限的,所以英语口语和阅读的做法是很少的。但是,英语阅读理解是至关重要的,尤其是在大学英语四级考试非英语专业学生的4/6。在这些测试中,阅读理解项目占据愈趋关注,最终成绩的一部分。非英语专业学生英语学习的主要目的是从书面材料中获取信息,并阅读他们提供最佳和即时语料输入,从而可以提高学生的语言技能,因此,英语阅读教学的任务是非常艰巨的和关键。根据阅读现状,阅读应该是教师的教学分为两个因素:阅读能力的发展,以及开发中的语言能力。一个人的阅读能力可以分为四个技能:扫描技巧,略读技巧,深入的阅读技巧和批判性的阅读技能,语言能力是指词汇,短语和话语的理解和组织。与阅读理解能力高的学生不仅可以很容易掌握的知识,也有自己的语言技能,这将促进阅读能力的回报。阅读能力和语言表达能力之间的这种关系非常影响教学方法:如何培养学生的阅读能力,通过提高他们的语言能力,尤其是学习的词汇,从而杀死一石二鸟。这项研究将回答这个问题,找到办法来解决这个问题。
Language is the bridge of communication, and English is one of the mostimportant medium languages to transfer all kinds of information from all over theworld. As a vital skill, reading is the stepping-stone to learn English and communicatein English. So reading plays a rather important role in English learning for Chineselearners who take English as the foreign language. For university students in China,the chances of face to face communicating with people whose mother tongue isEnglish are very limited, so the practices of speaking and reading English are very few.But English reading comprehension is crucial, especially in CET band 4/6 ofnon-English major students. In these tests reading comprehension items occupy alarge part of the final grade. The main purpose of learning English for non-Englishmajor students is to get the information from written materials, and reading offersthem with optimal and immediate corpus input, which can improve students’ languageskills, therefore the task of teaching English reading is very arduous and critical.According to the present situation of reading, teachers’ instruction on reading shouldbe divided into two factors: the development of reading ability, and the developmentof language ability. One’s reading ability can be divided into four skills: scanning skill,skimming skill, in-depth reading skill and critical reading skill; language abilitymeans the understanding and organization of vocabulary, phrase and discourse.Students with high reading comprehension ability can not only be easy to graspknowledge, but also own language skills, which will promote the reading ability inreturn. This relationship between reading ability and language ability extremelyinfluence the teaching methods: how to develop students’ reading skills throughimproving their language skills especially the vocabulary studying, thus killing twobirds with one stone. This study will answer this question and find the way to solvethe problem.

It is necessary for teachers and experts in our country to give great concern withthe current situation of English teaching and learning. As a matter of fact only theteachers having been teaching English in China’s colleges can describe the situationthat in a single classroom sixty or even more students have classes together. Languageteaching theories, methods, or approaches especially English teaching theories beingwell popularized previously had scarcely performed on the situation of largedimension class. Then it is not convincing for them to put these theories or approachesto work in such size of class. In other words, as long as it is large size class setting,which can be thought as the common way of learning in Asian countries, there ishardly any possibility for us to try to take in newest established theories, approachesor methodologies.
