Chapter One Introduction

When we watch English movies or communicate with foreigners, it never takes hardfor us to notice this truth: the native speakers tent to apply more exaggerate words,intonation together with facial expressions in their sayings. Such as ha, aha, oops, ouch,well, my god and so on. These interjections commonly exist not only in daily talking, butalso in the literary works especially in poems. People use them to express emotion,emotional reaction and so on. Different from Chinese grammar, onomatopoetic word isinvolved in English interjections. According to the traditional English grammar,interjections are classified as form words.

 But interjections can not be treated as formwords of full sense. Different from any other form words, interjections have nogrammatical relation with the whole sentence. They even can wholly express what thespeaker wants to convey.Historically, Latin grammars described interjections as non-words. They thought,interjections in a sense are just imitation sound of feelings or states of mind. In fact,interjections are not only imitations of sound to express emotions. They have bothsemantic and pragmatic value. On defining interjections, linguists have a chasm betweeninterjection and word. In resent years, more and more attention is paid on the pragmaticvalue of interjections.
Originating from onomatopoetic word, like the spontaneous reactions, interjectionsto some degree reflect speakers’ culture background information. Because of strongreligion tradition, English native speakers’ interjections often have god, my god, hell intheir expressions and so on. The applications of interjections can be considered as acultural phenomenon. As a component of culture, interjections have undergone a changeof times. We can see the change by comparing different times literature works and dailyconversations.As time passed, interjections are no longer the simple imitation sound of people’semotions and states of mind, and some contend words also bear the same function asinterjections, such as silence, listen, rubbish and so on. In modern times, more and morelinguists notice the vitality of interjection in social communication and then its researchvalue. As mentioned above, interjections are also carrier of the speaker's cultureinformation. Interjection fully reflects in a sense the essence of English daily conversation.To English learners, mastering and saying authentic English is one of their studying goals.It is necessary for them to acquire more about interjections, including phonology,morphology, especially interjections’ pragmatic functions and how this functions work outin the real social communication.

1.1 Aim of the Study
The study about interjection has been a long history. Chinese scholars have paidattention on how to define interjections, summarize the characteristics and expressivefunctions of English interjections.
