In 1876, the government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland commissioned a survey to find who owned the land in Ireland; it was found that almost all of the land was owned by 0.2% of the population. The majority of these were small landlords. Many of the richest landlords were absentee landlords, in that they lived in Britain or elsewhere in Ireland and paid agents like Charles Boycott to manage their estates. Landlords generally divided their estates into smaller farms which were let to tenant farmers. Tenant farmers were generally on one-year leases, and could be evicted by landlords even if they paid their rents. Some of the tenants were large farmers, but the majority were much smaller. Many of the small farmers worked as labourers on the larger farms. The poorest sector of agricultural workers were the landless labourers, who worked on the land of other farmers. Farmers were a very politically important group, they had more votes than any other sector of society. In the 1850s, some tenant farmers formed associations to demand "the three F's": fair rent, fixity of tenure and free sale. In the 1870s, the Fenians tried to organise the tenant farmers in County Mayo to resist eviction. They mounted a demonstration against a local landlord in Irishtown and succeeded in getting him to lower his rent. After that, the word"boycott" is widespread, meaning "to unite together reject".
Another example, the word "narcissism" is from Greek mythology. Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who had never seen his reflection.One day, when Narcissus became thirsty and stopped by a pond to take a drink, he saw his reflection in the water for the first time. Not knowing any better, he fell in love and started talking to it. Not yet understanding reflections, Narcissus thought his reflection was speaking to him and became more engaged. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away at the pool and changed into the flower that bears his name, the narcissus.
Except these two words, there are so many words have their own historys. We can learn about them generally, thus increasing our interests to learn English.
These four motivations are mentioned in our textbook. But, when I search the Internet, I also find another motivation, logical motivation which trys to find the memory laws and methods by researching the internal relations of the word and the extern relations between words, thus edifying people. For example, we know "spring, summer, autumn and winter", butwe don't know the " www.51lunwen.org/wordings/ Lichun, Lixia, Liqiu, Lidong". However, if we know Lichun is the beginning of the spring, absolutely we know Lichun is "Spring begins", and then "Summer begins, Autumn begins and Winter begins".
After we have learnt about these five kinds of word motivations, we should realize that these motivations are five ways for us to memory words，study words and use words.
