It is definite that the exploration of polysemy is crucial insemantic study of language and cognition. The general shift from traditional semantics to cognitive linguistics, particularly cognitive semantics, made a giant leapin exploring the fundamental nature of polysemy. Chapter Five Analysis and Discussion

In this chapter, a detailed and thorough analysis of the polysemous word or moretechnically called node word devotion will be conducted on its priming features ofcollocation, colligation, semantic association, and its pragmatic and textual features ineach sense. More importantly, discussion comes after the analysis. First and foremost,collocates of the node word devotion are needed to be found out from BNC corpus.The BNC web (CQP-Edition), into which the standard query is used to type{devotion/N}, shows the accurate results in the form of lines with the node words inmiddle and returns 640 hits in 382 different texts. The frequency of devotion is 6.51instances per million words, which is quite small compared with those common words,the reason of which is maybe of its abstractedness, formality and limited scope ofusage in religion, etc.According to either the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English orWordNet 2.1, four definitions or senses of devotion as using noun are listed as follows,namely 1) feelings of ardent love, great affection or admiration for someone; 2)commitment to some purpose, to a particular activity; 3) religious zeal; thewillingness to serve God; 4) (usually plural) religious observance or prayers (usuallyspoken slightly). From these four senses, it can be seen that the former three areuncountable nouns while the last one is countable and it is usually in plural form.Therefore, the last sense of devotion can be easily and clearly found out in the corpusof BNC. Besides, we cannot exclude the cases of the last sense in its singular form.The figure below is the frequency breakdown of lexical items between devotionand devotions.
