Sonoco, successful manufacturers of industrial and consumer packaging for a century and their strategy was the main focus of this case study. Sonocos growth through early 80's ended up in late 90's due to Asian financial crisis and American economy downturn. The impact of this crisis took Sonoco's top line sales to 6% drop in 1995 and 1999. Even though company managed to increase the net income by reducing expenses, top line sales decline caused the stock price to low level. The pressure is to restore the stake holder's value. On the other side the change took place in packing industry and world economy due to globalization, caused competitive challenge and new opportunities. American companies forced to search for the cheap labor and countries like India and china took advantage of this situation to draw the companies to their domain. Between 1998 and 2000 increased market in food and beverages segment took the attention of the companies to consider on packaging which was played a major role in brand advertising to retain the consumers at that period. Packaging companies scope is to be equipped with new technology and 'the winners in this race will be those who have the ability to speed development through use of the new technologies and application of innovative tools 'one industry observer noted (Sonoco case study P3). Late 90's Sonoco's strategy was to full fill the needs of the consumers to retain the business rather than what company wants to.

Sonoco's new business model was aimed at generating top line growth and reining in overall cost to be globally competitive. Controlling companywide cost is the main agenda for new CEO DeLoach. The strategy also called rethinking of certain company structure including HR (Sonoco case study p1). 'For a particular corporate strategy, the HR system has a universal or constant or effect on organizational performance' (Gerhart & Becker, 1996) In order to change the HR structure Cindy Hartley was assigned as VP of HR as 'change maker'. Harris DeLoach set Harley an objective to reduce the function's cost by 20% or $2.8 Million.

DeLoach tasked Hartley the operational cost reduction and performance system that can lead to sustainable competitive advantage. Academic points that Barney's RBV focuses value, rare, inimitable and non substitutable. This model is combination of science, theory and economy. DeLoach words to Harley 'you can have the best strategy in the world but without effective execution by people you going to fail' reflects the Resource based view method of HR.
