Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Studies on Oral English teaching Abroad
The history of teaching shows that language teaching abroad emerges earlier thanChina; the modern language teaching begins at the end of Middle Ages (A.P.R. Howatt,1984:1). At the end of the18th century and the beginning of the 19th century,Grammar-Translation Method was dominant for long, by using mother tongue to teachforeign languages, and concentrated on the accuracy of language application, ie,literary excellence and the priority of the written language at that time. However, theyemphasized grammar rules too much, resulting a teacher-centered instead ofstudent-centered way of teaching, and therefore, ignored the oral language teaching.In 1880s, when Reform movement occurred in Europe, speaking and orallanguage was admitted as the first place of language, and a theme-centered arrangementof teaching materials appeared. Here come methods like Natural method etc. at thattime, who believed that second languages can be acquired as same as the way childrenlearned their mother tongue. They advocated exposing the learners to the targetlanguage until they repeat the language spontaneously and at last interpret the languagemeaning through the pronunciation of the language, or associate the expressions withthe real situation.

2.2 Studies on Oral English teaching at home
It‘s been decades since English language came into China as a foreign languageformally. During this time, many methods are used in English teaching. In recent years,the English teaching has been changed its focus from grammar and sentence structureto oral expression and communication. However, the overall level of Chinese students‘oral English still needs improving, especially compared with their ability of languagestructure and grammar using. For English teaching in primary schools, the teachingobjectives are pupils whose language competence for both languages develops as theirincreasing and accumulating cognition of understanding and knowing the outside world.Therefore, it is crucial and the best way to focus on realizing the languagecommunication functioned by their existing knowledge.For hundreds of years, linguistics have developed into different approaches tostudy a better way of understanding the mechanism of language function andacquisition, which could contribute to the application and teaching of languages.The current English oral ability education in primary schools is based on textualmaterials about daily conversations. The teaching contents include, for example,analyzing, understanding, pronunciation practice, grammar practice, repeating, recitingand graphical dialogues simulation, etc. This is the common way to efficiently use alanguage from understanding the objects to express one‘s own opinions. Althoughmany people learnt by this way, they did not manage to fluently speak English. This israther a ―repeating‖ teaching model.
