ternal business environment presenting a double-edged sword.Chinese firms have competed on the basis of price and the command of local marketknowledge. WTO has changed the situation because foreign firms can now enter theChinese market and capture the same low-cost advantages and companies such asCoca Cola and Kodak have increasingly developed more and more local marketknowledge. Therefore, how can Chinese firms win? The increasingly challengingissues facing Chinese firms have inspired the argument and the philosophy of thecurrent study. With the rise of the information age, the world today becomesincreasingly open, online and transparent. Consequently, nations, firms andindividuals have become more vulnerable, the pace of technological change hasaccelerated and the world is in constant evolution. Therefore, the rules of the “businessgame” and implications of competitiveness are changing all the time. In the meantime,the indicators, coverage, influences and different facets of competitiveness need to beredefined. Therefore, the study of China firm competitiveness will involve a largenumber of crucial issues concerned with China’s industrial R&D policy, technologyand innovation system, science and technology policy, technology strategy and theappropriateness and effectiveness of the implementation strategy. These importantissues will be debated and reflected.
