In contemporary China, population growth led to the increased demands for urban functional facilities. However, the scarcity of land resources and the lack of construction funds limit the development of urban functional faculties, which are not able to meet the requirement of the booming population. So maximizing the use of existing resources becomes an inevitable trend of urban development. As space which has a lot of infrastructures and facilities, campus has potential ability to provide public services for city. In China, because of the characteristic of teaching arrangement, most of the “hardware facilities” are idle during the none-education time. If these facilities can be open to society at a certain time and under certain institutional arrangement, it will not only improve the utilization of them and create higher economic benefits, but also benefit the city and community residents. These faculties can bring high level of learning, work and Living standard to them. Furthermore, it will also ease the pressure on the demands of urban functional faculties.

In such a macro-environment, the concept of “open-campus” was introduced into in China as a new direction for developing a university campus. “open-campus” concept changes the core function of a university. The university will transform from a closed educational institution into a diversified and open-ended social complex. As a result of this transformation, the campus, known as the vessel and stage of university, also shows its new eternity features. (Gen Hongbing 1991)

1.2 Description of the research area研究领域的描述
Nanjing, the capital city of the Jiangsu province in Southeast China and one of the three major cities of Yangtze River Delta region, covers an area of 6.6 thousand square kilometers, has a population of more than 8 million people. The urban area accounts for 4.7 thousand square kilometers which includes 0.8 thousand square kilometers main urban area .Nanjing is the 5th city of China when it comes to education, research and development. There are 26 university students per 100 persons, which stand for a high rate in China. Nanjing has quite a few universities, and they almost cover all range of research fields. (Figure 1-1)

Southeast University is located in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province of China which is a comprehensive university .As one of the famous universities in Nanjing, Southeast University has always been the university directly under the Ministry of Education. Southeast University currently has six campuses: Sipailou, Dingjiaqiao, Dragon Lake, Pukou, Xiao Zhuang and Yangtze Backstreet. They spread in the urban and rural areas of Nanjing and occupied 5980 acres in total As one of the main campuses of Southeast University, Sipailou campus is located in city center of Nanjing which is the ruins of the garden for Six Dynasties in history. Its location is the site of Imperial College in Ming Dynasty. Sipailou campus is developed from the former National Central University, and most of its buildings are western classical style, which were built in the period of Republican.
