Chapter One Deconstruction Thought in Walker’s Collection
Ⅰ. Space-time Conversion in Nineteen Fifty-five and Historical Connections to Black Women’s Musicality
Alice Walker’s tendency to pay attention to social ethics, morality, politics, economy, culture, and other real issues is increasingly obvious, and her creation techniques also show the characteristics of modernism. This kind of literary trend of thought with the characteristics of realism is called “neo-realism” or “post-modernist realism” by critics because it is significantly different from the traditional realism of the 19th century.
In Nineteen Fifty-five, Walker uses two tenses and two scenes, the present simple and the past simple. The present simple tense is used to write about the journal you are writing in, while the past simple tense is used to create a space for memories. The first scene is set in Gracie Mae Still’s home, and the second is when the two meet years later on the Johnny Carson show. Walker presents two-time threads and two memory spaces. The first timeline follows Gracie Mae’s six diaries, dating from 1955, 1956, 1957, 1960, 1968, and 1977, which chronicle Gracie Mae and Traynor’s relationship and music over 22 years. Here comes a layer of memories that Gracie Mae recalls of their relationship. The second timeline focuses on a performance on the Johnny Carson show at the climax of the story. The interaction and dialogue between the two people on the program form the second layer of memory space, which is the home space of Traynor recalled by Gracie Mae. Here the arrangement of time progresses in diary order, in the form of retrospective representation, with a past time clue occurring in the past triggered by the time clue of the journal of ongoing recollection. The appearance of the third layer is the connection between the plot and history, which can be said to be a kind of historical space.
Ⅱ. Fragmentization in Elethia, Advancing Luna and Critical
Thoughts on Lynching
Alice Walker writes for feminists and female readers at first, so there are no feminists and female readers who become “resistant readers” when reading Walker’s works. However, as a black female writer, Walker has double concerns about identity and gender, and her text creation is restricted by male writers and society. In the collection, it could be observed that Walker continued the feminist literary criticism concept and the creation technique of postmodernism, but tried to creatively break through the tradition, giving her unique ideas.
Alice Walker believes that the creativity of black women in the South spread from the art form of sewing quilts with needles, fabric and thread. As a part of women’s daily chores, it is usually done by several women, including family members, relatives and neighbors. During the sewing process, women sit together to learn sewing skills from each other and share their troubles and happiness. So for women, another important meaning of the quilt is that it allows them to stay united and cooperative. Black women, on the other hand, integrated their ethnic aesthetic characteristics and customs in the texture, color and shape choice of cloth.
